Abstract

Drilling for shallow gas constitutes a large portion of the hydrocarbon exploration activity in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Evaluation of these reservoirs has been accomplished with a combination of basic open hole and cased hole logs. A highly competitive wireline market has evolved with most competitors providing similar services. Recently clients have been commenting on the mixed results they are achieving in interpreting these logs. The nature of these shallow gas bearing formations is such that when on eventures beyond the well known geological horizons and established log cutoffs, interpretation becomes ambiguous.
