Abstract

The carbon/oxygen response has been used as a salinity-independent, qualitative indicator of water saturation for several years, and the carbon/oxygen logs have generally been interpreted by means of overlays and downhole calibrations. However, with the advent of newer tools that perform spectral stripping of the inelastic data, the carbon and oxygen response can now be more fully depicted mathematically. Mathematical models can now be described which imitate the carbon/oxygen ratio (COR). By proper modeling of the logging environment, including the borehole and formation matrix, water saturation can be derived from the COR.
