Abstract

The Deep Propagation Tool (DPT*) is a new electromagnetic well logging tool that operates in the tens of megahertz range. Measurements of the attenuation and phase shift of the electromagnetic waves which the tool radiates into the formation around the wellbore are used to determine both the formation resistivity and dielectric constant. Because the dielectric constant of water is relatively high compared to that of hydrocarbons and most minerals, the measurement of the formation dielectric constant is a particularly useful indicator of porosity and water saturation. In comparison to the EPT* tool, the lower frequency and longer spacing of the DPT tool give it the ability to penetrate beyond the invaded zone.
