Abstract

General reaction to mention of the problem of shale distribution is frequently one of "who cares", or "just tell me how much shale there is and frequently one of "who cares", or "just tell me how much shale there is and I’ll plug in a correction for it and come out with my reserves." Irregardless I’ll plug in a correction for it and come out with my reserves." Irregardless of this attitude, consideration of shale distribution is important. It of this attitude, consideration of shale distribution is important. It affects resistivity, porposity, permeability, and ultimately the reserves affects resistivity, porposity, permeability, and ultimately the reserves that can be recovered from a zone. In some areas such as south-eastern Alberta, that can be recovered from a zone. In some areas such as south-eastern Alberta, productivity is the key to the whole economic success of a project. In my productivity is the key to the whole economic success of a project. In my opinion, distribution of shales is somewhat underrated in most of the log opinion, distribution of shales is somewhat underrated in most of the log interpretation methods commonly used nowadays. I therefore propose to talk a interpretation methods commonly used nowadays. I therefore propose to talk a little about both the porostiy and resistivity aspects of the shaly sand little about both the porostiy and resistivity aspects of the shaly sand problem.
