Abstract

Alberta’s coal reserves are estimated to contain over three times as much gas as Alberta’s known conventional reserves. However, proving the coal gas reserves requires that core gas desorption tests are run. For companies exploring in specific areas, coal gas content can be estimated from wireline log responses using a computer program calibrated on a small number of desorption tests. This represents a considerable saving if desorption tests do not have to be run on every well. This paper outlines the successful usage of these newly developed log interpretation techniques in assessing an area for potential coal bed methane development.
