Abstract

Over the years Sable Island has become infamous as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” as over 200 ships and approximately 5,000 people have been claimed by these shifting sands. In addition, the island has become recognized as the home of a herd of some 200 to 300 wild horses and is the only known nesting ground of the Ipswich Sparrow (Plates 1 and 2).
