Abstract

A new drilling system has been developed to improve navigating reservoirs in horizontal wells. The system integrates Formation Evaluation Measurement While Drilling (FEMWD) sensors into a steerable mud motor, and has the capability to accurately navigate within narrow corridors and/or geologically complex reservoirs. The FEMWD sensors are positioned less than 15′ from the bit and include propagation resistivity and gamma ray instruments. Additionally, a near bit inclinometer is provided.
